“Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl” Documentary Set for 2027
The feature-length documentary “Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl” is reportedly scheduled to debut on Hulu in February 2027.
The film will use never-before-seen footage to examine how Michael Jackson’s performance for Super Bowl XXVII at the Rose Bowl came together.
Michael Jackson’s Super Bowl XXVII halftime show took place in 1993 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
Bao Nguyen, who directed Netflix’s “The Greatest Night in Pop”, will direct and produce the documentary.
Skydance Sports is producing the documentary alongside Optimum Productions and NFL Films. John Branca, co-executor of the Michael Jackson Estate, is among the producers of the documentary.
The documentary explores how Michael Jackson’s 1993 Super Bowl XXVII halftime show set a new standard for pop spectacle.
In 1992, Fox aired a live “In Living Color” special opposite Super Bowl XXVI, which pulled nearly 29 million viewers away from the game’s traditional halftime programming.
NFL league executives responded to the viewer drop-off by pursuing Michael Jackson to shift the halftime focus toward contemporary superstar talent.
After the introduction, Michael Jackson was launched onto the stage via a trapdoor and stood silently for nearly two minutes while the crowd cheered. His 1993 set included the songs “Jam,” “Billie Jean,” “Black or White,” “We Are the World,” and “Heal the World.”
Michael Jackson was joined by a choir of 3,000 children from the Los Angeles area during the performance of “We Are the World” and “Heal the World.” Later accounts credited Michael Jackson’s 1993 appearance with helping reverse the viewer drop-off that had plagued the Super Bowl halftime break.
