Jennifer Hudson Just Explained Why She’s Not Chasing a Wedding With Common
Jennifer Hudson sat down with TODAY’s Jenna Bush Hager and Sheinelle Jones, and despite how this story’s been framed elsewhere, she didn’t actually announce any wedding plans with Common. What she did instead is push back on the idea that she’s supposed to want one in the first place.
She was direct about it. Asked about the typical expectation that a woman in a serious relationship is working toward marriage, she said flatly, “I’ve never been that girl.” Her point wasn’t that marriage is off the table forever, it was that she’s not interested in treating a relationship like it’s only valuable if it’s building toward a specific milestone. She described what she has with Common instead as “divine,” framing the connection itself, not the paperwork that might someday follow it, as the actual point.
She gave a real example of what that connection looks like in practice. Common performed “Glory,” one of her favorite songs, at Madison Square Garden, because she asked him to. That’s a specific, generous gesture, an artist using a massive stage to do something purely because the person he’s with wanted him to, and it says more about the relationship’s actual texture than any headline about future wedding plans could.
The rest of the interview was really about her, not her relationship. Her 17-year-old son is the reason she’s back in the recording studio, and she explained her own relationship with music simply. “I always say a room without music has no personality.” She also talked about her talk show, now in its fifth season, calling the whole run “fun,” and mentioned the tunnel guests walk through on the show as something fans have genuinely latched onto.
I think the actual story here is a pretty simple correction. Jennifer Hudson isn’t planning a wedding, and she wasn’t vague or cagey about why. She’s saying clearly that she doesn’t measure a relationship’s worth by whether it’s heading toward one, and she sounds genuinely at peace with that, not defensive about it. That’s a different, and honestly more interesting, story than another celebrity teasing an engagement that isn’t actually happening.
