Stephen A. Smith Apologizes for False Divorce Details on “The Culture Table”
Smith issued a correction and apologized to Teyana Taylor and Iman Shumpert after repeating false settlement details on an episode of “The Culture Table,” On October 10, Smith uploaded a video to his YouTube channel admitting fault for the statements.
Smith had falsely reported that Taylor received $25 million, $10 million in properties, luxury cars, and other assets from the divorce, and that Shumpert walked away with approximately $2 million and was left without a home. In the video, Smith said, “Those statements were inaccurate, and I want to sincerely apologize to both Iman Shumpert and Teyana Taylor,.”
Smith stated that Straight Shooter Media and he as CEO failed to meet the standard of properly sourcing information. He added, “Straight Shooter Media and I as the CEO have a responsibility to ensure that information presented is properly sourced. We didn’t meet that standard here. Plain and simple.”
Smith admitted that the statements attributed to Iman Shumpert were wholly fabricated. He stated that the inaccurate information was based on quotes and claims circulating in media reports and social media that were attributed to Shumpert.
Smith stated that the financial figures he presented were inaccurate after speaking directly with Taylor. He personally spoke with Taylor and Shumpert to apologize and express respect for them.
Smith said, “I also have great respect for Teyana, for her talent, as a mother, and for the career she’s built for herself. Award-winning career she’s built for herself. Not to mention, she has always, always been incredibly kind to me personally. I also regret that the segment may have left viewers with the impression that Iman had publicly disparaged the mother of his children.”
Taylor and Shumpert finalized their divorce in 2024 after Taylor filed privately the previous year. Much of the divorce case between Taylor and Shumpert remained sealed.
In 2025, Taylor accused Shumpert of leaking sealed court records related to their divorce.
Shumpert’s lawyer, Stephen C. Steele, denied that Shumpert leaked any allegations or claims stated in the pleadings.
